Close the Gap

For many decades there has been a funding gap in Ontario’s education system. When school boards had some control over education spending they, like the provincial government, discriminated against elementary students and teachers by allocating more dollars per pupil to the secondary panel.

As we go to press the provincial election has just concluded. The outcome is good news for public education.

• At its last meeting before the next provincial election,  delegates  attending  ETFO’s  Representative  Council heard from Education Minister Kathleen Wynne. Wynne outlined the Liberal government’s improvements to education  during  its  four  years  in  office.

In February ETFO launched the first stage of Closing the Gap, our campaign to achieve equitable funding for elementary education in this province.

Every year  the  president  and  general  secretary of  ETFO  go to Queen’s Park to make a presentation to the Finance and Economic Affairs Committee. Our  goal is to influence government decisions prior to the release of the school grants later in the spring.
